The Farmer's Diner

Before our trip back east (as westerners say), I checked out the restaurants on our route. I came across this place called The Farmer's Diner. The food was pretty standard American fare, but they used more local ingredients than any restaurant I have seen before. They also highlighted the ingredients in the menu that were local--everything from the beef to the cheese to the vegetables.

It was a freezing day when we arrived at the restaurant in the middle of Vermont--the most underpopulated state I have ever been to. We rushed into the restaurant just before it closed at 4 for a very late lunch. I ordered the mac & cheese made with Cabot cheddar. My husband ordered the grilled cheese & bacon made with local bacon and Cabot cheddar. Both meals were delicious and comforting--but nothing so special that I'd drive to Queeche just for it.

I was impressed by the look of the diner and the comfortable surrounding and the at-home feeling I had while in there. It was a little cool in the dining car, but there is also a full restaurant inside which was likely warmer. If you happen to be in the area and want something normal and home-cooked--and especially if you are there with children, I would check out the Farmer's Diner.
