Joey and I planned to visit the Noah's ark exhibit with my sister's family on Saturday at 2pm. We decided to have lunch first, but there really isn't much near the Skirball Center, so I browsed the in-museum restaurant. Normally in-museum restaurants are pricey and food is just so-so. This particular restaurant, however, does not fit into that bucket.
The Ziegler Cafe has a dressy-feel but there were lots of kids in the restaurant. They have kids booster seats and high chairs, a full menu for kids and even an activity sheet.
An for the adults? For the adults if you like fish, you'll be in heaven. If you don't like fish but you're a keen vegetarian, you'll be in heaven. If you don't like vegetables or fish you'll be in sort of a bind deciding between Margheritata pizza (that is just ok, but pretty big and a relatively good value) or Grilled Cheese.
And now for the fish lovers out there. The Nicose Salad comes with fresh tuna, cooked all the way, and those delicious little fingerling potatoes set out in clumps around fresh lettuce and the peasant style salad gets some justice. But if you're really hungry, don't miss the Salmon Pastrami Club. Two of us got this dish and probably we could've shared it. The one thing about going to a museum straight after lunch is that you don't want to carry around your leftovers.
The Salmon Pastrami club is marble rye stacked with plenty of smoked salmon, avocado, onion, tomato and a cream cheese-dill spread. It comes with your choice of waffle chips, fries or pasta salad. The flavors are fantastic! In most places around LA 4oz of smoked salmon costs an arm and a leg, but here, it's west-la lunch prices ($10-$12). I was stuffed after half the plate but ate the rest cause how can you leave smoked salmon like that?
If you're headed to the Skirball or need a midway point to meet some people, try Ziegler's, it is delicious and in a beautiful setting.
