Papoo's Hot Dog Show

Papoo's Hot Dog Show is a retro roadside restaurant kitty-corner from Bob's in Burbank. Like Mo's, Papoo's is overshadowed by its famous showy neighbor. The little shack has a surprising amount of parking in the back lot and seating inside and out. Don't be fooled by the front door practically hitting the counter, the kitchen takes up the middle but there are tables all the way around.

Papoo's menu ranges from your typical American breakfasts (served during breakfast hours only) to burgers and hot dogs to salads and chicken dishes. Plus they have milkshakes, you know, to go with your already "healthy" meal.

The menu is taped to the wall and on the counter. If you're eating in, you pay later, but you can take your food to go if you wish. Grab a booth when you finish and check out the menu from the old days that included .65 cent burgers and dogs, fully loaded.

I went to Papoo's today with 2 others. I had trouble deciding what I wanted because of the diverse menu. I ended up getting the daily special, the Greek burger. The special came with fries and coleslaw, but I guess I failed to actually say I wanted the special, so I got the burger only and was sort of surprised at that when it arrived at my table. So, if you want "the works" be sure to say it exactly. The Greek burger ended up being a little weird. The meat and bun was delicious--and filling, I should have just gotten a plain cheeseburger. The Greek burger had feta cheese and spinach on it, but then, it also had all the regular toppings--pickles, tomato, lettuce and even thousand island dressing. Like I said, weird combination--I pictured the Greek to be just Greek, not totally unusual.

One of my fellow diners had the barbecue burger and it looked pretty good. The chopped salad, however, had hardly any lettuce but was protein packed with tons of bacon, ham and eggs. So, if you were going to get a salad because it is healthier than a burger, probably in this case it is not a good choice.

Generally though, I like the food at Papoo's if I stick with something normal--like a hot dog or a hamburger or something else that you would generally get at a burger joint. Try anything different though and you may be disappointed.
