O'Rourke's Diner

Tasting LA was on the road last week visiting local restaurants in obscure cities across the East Coast. Our first stop was O'Rourke's Diner. We had it bookmarked before we left for unknown reasons.

The diner is located in downtown Middletown. It looks old fashioned and is just the kind of place I'd want to try just driving by. We stopped in on a Friday morning and there were people inside but it wasn't packed. I heard that on the weekends the place is overflowing.

The breakfast menu was vast. It has classics, gourmet twists on classics and even a few Irish options. As we sat down and started to look over the menu, the waiter brought over a small plate of sweet bread samples. I tasted the pumpkin bread which was fantastic. He noted that some of their sweet breads were being used in the daily French toast special.

I ordered the mini raspberry pancakes and a side of bacon. The price was reasonable but I was disappointed that my pancakes didn't come with anything. My dad ordered the huevos rancheros which he tries everywhere. My mom ordered an Irish version of eggs Benedict. My husband got the classic eggs-sausage-pancakes meal. Everyone enjoyed their breakfasts and were satisfied with the unusual choices mixed with classics.

The coffee was filled promptly and the service was prompt. My only complaint is that the restaurant was a little cold and I had to wear my jacket the whole time. So when you go, try a weekday and dress warm.
