Limon Latin Grill

I was looking for a place to meet my sister halfway between Burbank and Ojai. Usually, we meet in Westlake Villiage but it's in the middle of nowhere and there is nothing to do there if one person is late.

A coworker suggested we meet in Simi Valley instead. This sounded like a plan because it was WAY closer for me. Plus, there is a place called the Simi Valley Town Center that is filled with interesting restaurants and shops. My sister agreed to meet there and I pointed out a great looking restaurant that seemed to sell itself as a Tapas Bar. The restaurant was called Limon Latin Grill.

But, it wasn't a tapas restaurant. It was nothing but a glorified Mexican restaurant with some sophisticated flair. Excited about the possibility of delicious appetizers, I was disappointed by the selection.

The three of us shared a plate of calamari. It was light but hardly breaded and yellow. I think they mixed saffron in the batter to make the calamari yellow but it was a tad unnatural. The dipping sauce needed salt.

We received a plate of tri-colored chips with some kind of cheesy salsa. The weird thing was that the cheesy salsa was cold. If it had been warm I may have liked it more.

I decided against dinner and instead got the 1/2 dozen Rockefeller oysters. These came with cocktail sauce and horseradish. The horseradish was bland and the sauce was flavorless.

A fellow diner got the Ropa Vieja. Despite the fancy name, this is a plate of stewed shredded beef, beans and rice. The rice was mixed with those square vegetables--something I thought was more common in Asian cooking. The beef was pretty good, but it wasn't worth the price.

The third person at our table got a Latin salad with chicken. The only thing Latin about it was the addition of papaya and pineapple. It was a good salad, but nothing special.

We sat on the patio which was nice looking but a little chilly and it was right next to the parking lot so there were car sounds. The mall has a lot of prime inner real estate and not one restaurant is inside there, all the restaurants which should be inner facing are outer facing.

I don't recommend this restaurant. If you happen to be in the town center and you're looking for some food try one of the other restaurants instead.

You're pretty adventurous. If I was eating somewhere and it started off that badly, the last thing I would have ordered would have been shellfish. You've got guts.

I went to Limon and liked the food so much that I've been back several times since. The first time I was there I tried the Ropa Vieja, and it was one of the best I've had. The meat was warm, juicy and flavorful. Although I'm a big steak fan, I didnt order the steak the first time around since I'm always spectical to try steak at a retaurant that is not famous for it. But, one of the other people I was with ordered a steak dish and it was cooked to perfection. I was also surprised at the reasonableness of the prices since the atmosphere is so upscale. There are cute cabanas on the patio and lush ivory suede booths inside. I also heard that they are open on the weekends until 2am for dancing & drinks. Oh, definitely try the rasberry mojito. I ordered it because I overheard someone at the table next to us saying it was one of the best they've had and the only other one as good was from Asia de Cuba. It was fabulous!

Wow. What a review. I was disappointed you didn't have a good experience, but i feel compelled to respond for the sake of the people who rely on your review. My name is Ron and Limon is my baby. Its name is Limon Latin Grill; nowhere do we suggest we are a tapas bar, though we have a great selection of tapas, and we have a great bar. The calamari is colored by a latin spice called Bijol and not saffron, although saffron would be a great spice and VERY expensive. The "cheesy salsa" is a bean paste salsa and has NO cheese in it. Limon has foods from various Southamerican countries and based on customer response, a wonderful concept and a great menu well executed. Obviously we have our critics, though they are truly few and in-between. I'm sorry we didn't impress you, but Limon is doing great overall. Thanks for the opportunity to respond.

Limon is one of the worst restraunts besides the food being terrible the owner is the worst.I have been there twice and both times the so called owner and the Hostess were completely wasted.Great for business......TOTAL LOSERS!!!!!!!

I thought I was the only one that felt like this is a horrible place.I was there last night and wont return! TERRIBLE would be a good way to describe.
Who wrote the good comments the owners???????

Harsh review for the last couple of people....
I do have to say that I did not like the food. Me and my wife have been there a couple of times and were dissapionted the first time but decided that maybe after a while of the restraunt being open they got there stuff together.
I was wrong the food was worse.Dont waste your money or time on this one.......

Im so glad I found a place to let people know what a bad experience.Food is cold,no good and the service lacks, maybe needs new management or maybe owners have no clue about how to run a restraunt .either way hated it

Owners or managers, I would ignore recent reviews... problem with tecnology... you dont know what is real or not. I am real and i will be emailing you guys directly to book my holiday party.
thank you again.

Came across this site Im looking for a place to dine in Simi with friends .This restraunt has mixed reviews.I guess we'll keep looking.

Ok the Limon latin grill restraunt do these people know what latin food taste like?It doesnt taste like what they are serving up.Not worth the money.

Anonymous said...

I have visited the restraunt twice the first time just OK the second time the prices went up and the portions went down.
Do you think people dont notice things like this?Really!
Maybe if the food was good but not even that.I would not recommed this restraunt.

Anonymous said...

I have never heard a good thing about the limon latin grill. Why would anyone good to a place where not only Zagat rated as just OK but everyone i talked to hated it.
Sounds like another restraunt is going out of business.

I did not enjoy this place at all the service is terrible not to mention the food.way too pricey for what it is.
Not worth it!this is in the same rank as applebees.

My husband and I ate here on a Monday evening once. The place had lots of promise - upscale decor and inventive menu - but they failed in execution. Our food was cold. My husband's fish tasted old, and the rice in my dish was not cooked all the way through and tasted as though there was sand in it. We sent the food back and they did the right thing in refunding our meals. But I'm reluctant to try it again. They need to try a little harder with the food because the ambiance will only keep people coming in for so long....

Anonymous said...

Yes the food is not good and the service stinks.who runs this place?Maybe someone who has better knowledge of the business will take over.Whatever all I know I will not be returning.

Hey Espana girl at the oc your comments were written @ 1:42 am you must have been drunk to defend this place or maybe espana girl is the owner!hahaha.
The place sucks.

I don't recommend this restaurant. If you happen to be in the town center and you're looking for some food try one of the other restaurants instead.

My comment was to allow people in my area to know of my bad experience at this establishment.Im sorry about your disgruntle employees but I truly felt that this place was not worthy of my money. The food and service were honestly terrible!Maybe these comments will also allow the owners/management to make some serious changes to make it a better experience for local diners.

Bummer! I was just planning my friend's 40th Birthday get together (she's from San Francisco) and we have about 10 or more ladies looking for some good food, drinks and fun in Simi. I think I may try this place on my own one day to decide for myself, but would hate to disappoint everyone else...especially the birthday girl!

If you want to dine in the Simi Towne center can I suggest a wiser place than this one to spend your money.Even CPK is better than this dive.
The food is cold and tastless and the service is pretty much the same.

Anonymous said...

Although the atmosphere is pleasant(not the best just pleasant)
I was taken back at how bad the food was .I mean BAD.When I complained about my food being cold the waitress stated 'SORRY I GET THIS ALOT"wow!
Not a place that I would recommend to anyone.

What a joke this is the Simi hot spot?Come on Simi you need to get out more often.
What can I say.

I did.

i have truly big set back, i was one of the regulars of limon, been thru a lots of menu changes, it seems like the owners want to turn this into a bad comparation to a mexican restaurant, lots of the new menu items are nothing but frozen food, i did heard that there is no one to create the dishes any more they dont have a chef is this a bad situation for Limon are they close to closing the place down. food is bad how can you said that is good, it was before , but know even the fish is frozen i am one of the individuals who knows how to told when is fresh or frozen, good luck limon, but your new menu is nothin but a big joke...

Anonymous said...

I really wish this was a better restraunt the location is great and the place is nice but I have to agree with most of the comments the food and service is bad!Wont be long before this place closes down.

Anonymous said...

Im very glad I found a place that I can share my experience at this restraunt.
I was surprised that on a friday night I didnt have to wait at least 1/2 hour.I guess I realized why after I ate. Im not sure what the owners intended to do with this menu but let me tell you they had no clue! The food was cold and tasteless.Just a warning the service is not much better.I would give this place another 6months.

Anonymous said...

How clueless are you common sense?this restraunt sucks!this website is an honest forum of how people feel about this place. come on owners wake up do you really think business is bad because of ecomony no Its bad for you because the place SUCKS!I have eatin there and was less than impressed so I did go to the source.

Food quality has taken a turn for the worse. And the service has never been good. I am done giving this place a chance, if i want latin food I will go to el torito where the service is better than your average food court. Last time i was there I had a complaint and instead of a manager coming out the bartender came and talked to me?!?!? Not my idea of professional

Anonymous said...

Is this dump still open?Your right limon latin grill does suck!

Anonymous said...

I was very dissapointed after visiting Limon I really wished it was better than it was.
My so called Peruvian dish was not even close to what a peruvian dish taste like.
I really think these owners need to re-think this place.
The food needs alot of work and the staff is not much better. The bartender and waitress could have worked at fridays that would have been a better envoirment than this place.
come on people cant someone figure out what simi valley needs?

Anonymous said...

I went to check this place out we went for lunch on Sunday the band was OK more for 65 and up. The service and food was lacking in everyway. The bartender/waiter was too busy smoozing with one party to even acknowledge us.
My experience is I wont go back!

Anonymous said...

i went to limon recently and let me save everyone their time and money. it is not real latin food, not even close, and the the food has no flavor and is overpriced. If you want some good latin food worth the money make a small trip out to moorpark or chatsworth and you will not be dissapointed. The service will resemble a restaurant as well!

Anonymous said...

YUCK!!!!!!tHE FOOD IS TERRIBLE.wtf

Anonymous said...

I was there with my family and was disappointed in everything from the service to the food.
I have to agree with the comments (although some maybe harsh)I wont be dining at Limon Grill.

I am a local of Simi Valley and I am a Chamber member. I do believe that we should support our local establishments, however, I have been to this place not once, not twice but 3 times. And at different times of the day I might add, and the service there is horrible!!! I sat outside in the cute patio area for 1 1/2 hour and servers walked past me like I had the plague. Never once did anyone ask have you been helped or can I get you something. When brought to there attention everyone pointed fingers and said I thought that was someone elses section. Had i tried to skip without paying, everyone would have noticed me. Get your shit together. I will never go back and discourage anyone that even THINKS about going. Great music by the way.

Visited Limon Latin Grill Friday night despite some of the negative comments we have been hearing..
The food was cold and tastless the service was even worse.
In todays economy this place really needs to step it up.
DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY!

Anonymous said...

Its so sad to see all these restraunt closing...Im not sure how Limon Latin Grill is still alive. The food and service stink! I wouldnt suggest to anyone.

Anonymous said...

We went in hoping to try their food. All the servers were hanging out at the bar just like customers, we were only given one menu to use and only one set of utensils were at the table for two. We saw one guy that was there just waiting for his check and no one was helping him. Our whole section was just sitting and waiting so after about twenty minutes of just watching the servers walk by without even being offered drinks, we left. If it wasn't for the half-decent band, I don't think people will stay there. Total waste. The only positive reviews here probably come from people that work there or got paid for it. I wish that place got closed instead of the one across it. Maybe the food is not bad but with crappy service, we will never know. Too many workers and not enough work being done. They should cut down on the servers to hire a better band so more people will at least stay. So if you feel like wasting your time and waiting to be served, this is the place.

AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH I just wrote a long comment just to have the site pop up an error response.

IN A NUT SHELL

My husband and I love this place. We are regulars (every fri. & Sat.) we've had 3 huge birthday parties there. 2 mine & 1 my husband. We've introduced dozens of people to Limon and our friends have always enjoyed this place.
I'm just very baffled w/ all these mean comments.
I've also seen a lot of mean comments about Dekotas when they were in business and we happen to have liked that place as well. As we do many other wonderful restaurants in Simi.

Limon has catered many of our and our friends private parties. Always great food and service! So I truly hope you give this place a try.

Lets support our Simi Valley Merchants people. Everyone in our little town deserves to be successful & recognized.

Love-

Lisa
