Gindi Thai

Gindi Thai is housed in an unassuming building on the corner of Pass Ave and Riverside Dr. in Burbank. Gindi Thai marries together flavors from not only Thailand, but also Japan. Some restaurants would not be able to meet the challenge of tackling two diverse cultures through food. Gindi Thai, however not only meets the challenge but beats it, with flying colors.

The atmosphere inside the restaurant is modern and chic with a split level eating area, bench-couches for some tables and regular chairs for others. There is a large bar--although I have never seen anyone seated there as well as a sushi bar centered between the two dining areas with seats lining it. Gindi Thai effectively took over an awkward space and turned it into a charming restaurant that easily fits the food as much as it is comfortable to its patrons.

There are two menus--a sushi list and a menu full of traditional--and not so traditional Thai dishes. Together, the two menus make for a lot of things to review before choosing. I brought my mom to this restaurant on Tuesday night. We were greeted immediately by a friendly waiter and asked where we wanted to sit. The restaurant wasn't very crowded, but it wasn't empty either. A healthy crowd wandered in and out throughout our meal for both take out and eat in. We chose a table by the window and were offered drinks.

Don't pass up the iced tea. It is passion fruit tea (but actually brewed) and it comes with an orange slice in it. They refill your glass every time you look away so you will have plenty of opportunities to visit the restroom. Although there were only two of us, we wanted a little of everything. We started off with the sushi combination #1. We chose the combination because it gave us a little of everything and was cheaper than some of the rolls by themselves! The combination came with two ahi tuna pieces, two yellow fin pieces, one eel piece, one shrimp piece and a shrimp tempura roll. I generally don't enjoy shrimp so I wasn't looking forward to the roll. However, the roll was amazing. The tempura batter on the shrimp inside the roll gave it a hint of sweetness that worked well with the spicy wasabi and soy sauce. All the fish used in the sushi is of the highest quality. The pieces are thick and large and flavorful.

My mom ordered the Tom Kah soup for her next course. The soup was a very large portion for an appetizer and could be enough food with the sushi if you wanted. My mom has tried this soup in other places but loved the flavor of this soup. For my main course I ordered the filet of salmon over green beans with pineapple and curry sauce. My mom ordered the traditional Pad Thai. My mom noted that she had Pad Thai just a week before at a different restaurant and that the one at this restaurant was much more flavorful and also had a wonderful texture in the noodles. My salmon was very good when I added extra curry sauce. The red curry is so delicious with just a hint of sweet and a small burst of spice. The salmon was cooked well and the addition of pineapple was a nice flavor combination.

Gindi Thai is a delicious Thai/Sushi restaurant and a place I highly recommend. If you can't stay in, the take-out side of the business is quick and still just as delicious.
