Do you ever find yourself lazying around on a weekend afternoon thinking about a delicious, fast and easy lunch? I find I am doing this just about every weekend afternoon. In times like these, I head to Santoro's in Burbank for some submarine sandwiches. Santoro's is a family business that has been a part of Burbank for 50 years. Because it has been around so long it isn't smack dab in the middle of the town center area, but instead on the outskirts of the business district on Burbank Blvd.
Santoro's serves up small and large subs with a variety of fillings. Instead of the traditional lettuce and tomato on the sandwiches, you can only choose between pickles, onions and tomatoes. Fillings range from hot pastrami and pepper steak to pepperoni, Italian cold cut, ham and turkey, and old favorites like roast beef. Or, you could take the vegetarian route and go for the classic pepper and egg.
The meat is always freshly sliced and of excellent quality with lots of flavor. The cheese is a smokey provolone. The bread is a traditional submarine style, slightly crunchy on the outside, soft and chewy on the inside.
My favorite sandwich to have at Santoro's is the Italian cold cut. I can't name the meats except that I know for sure it has salami and does not have mortadella. I like to get my sandwich with everything. Everything includes meat, cheese, mayo and mustard, pickles, tomatoes, onions, spices and oil. I always ask for the hot pickled peppers on the side to give my sandwich a spicy kick. The small is more than enough, but the large, while only slightly bigger could easily serve 2 for lunch.
The sandwich is always filled with flavor and fresh as it is made right before your eyes. The service is relatively fast and friendly. There are also a variety of drinks - canned and a fountain as well as chips, potato, and macaroni salads. If you order a day in advance you can get party subs or party plates. You can also buy meat and cheese by the pound if you'd like to make your own sandwiches.
There is inside and outside seating and plenty of parking on the street and in the rear. Or, if you are really ambitious you can get your oil changed at the dependable, drive through Burbank Rapid Lube next door and then stop for a sandwich while you wait or as you pull away. The restaurant's only drawback is that it accepts cash only, however, there is an ATM machine inside.

I think the oil they put on makes the sandwich too oily. Therefore, my recommendation is to have no oil put on and take the sandwich home and put vinegar on by yourself.
